Will the hair grow back thicker?

No. This is the question everyone asks and the answer is genuinely no.

The hair removed is vellus hair — the fine, soft, usually colourless hair on the face. It grows back exactly as it was, at the same rate, in the same texture. It cannot grow back coarse, because vellus hair and coarse terminal hair are different types of hair entirely and one does not convert into the other.

What people are thinking of is shaving body hair, where a blunt cut end feels stubbly as it regrows. Vellus hair is too fine for that to happen.

Dermaplaning or waxing?

Different jobs, and Desiree does both.

Dermaplaning removes fine vellus hair along with dead surface skin. It is an exfoliation treatment first and a hair removal treatment second.

Waxing removes coarse hair from the root — chin, lip, brows. It doesn't exfoliate.

If your concern is darker, coarser hair on the chin or upper lip, you want waxing. If it's overall dullness, texture and a soft fuzz that shows up in photographs, you want this.

What to expect

Thirty minutes. Desiree cleanses the skin, works across it in sections with the blade held at an angle, and finishes with something soothing.

There is no pain. Most people describe it as a light scraping sensation, and a surprising number find it relaxing.

Your skin will look brighter immediately. Makeup goes on noticeably flatter the same day.

Aftercare

No makeup for the rest of the day if you can manage it. Skip heat, saunas and heavy exercise for 24 hours.

Sunscreen the next morning matters — freshly exfoliated skin burns more easily, and undoing the result with sun exposure is a waste of the appointment.

Keep acids and retinoids off for 48 hours.

Questions people ask

Does it hurt?

No. There is no heat, no pulling and no downtime — most people find it oddly relaxing.

Will the hair grow back thicker or darker?

No. Vellus hair regrows exactly as it was. See above.

How long does it last?

Three to four weeks for most people, which is roughly the surface skin cycle.

Can I have it if I have active breakouts?

Tell Desiree first. Dermaplaning over active spots can spread bacteria, so she may work around the area or suggest a different treatment that week.

How soon before an event should I book?

The day before is fine, and two days before is ideal. There's no downtime to plan around.

Can I add it to another treatment?

Yes — it's a common addition to hydro-dermabrasion, and clearing the surface first makes everything afterwards work better.
